May 20 tax assessment grievance deadline

April 21, 2014 - Brokerage
The law firm Herman Katz Cangemi & Clyne LLP (HKCC) reminds business property owners and multifamily residential developments in Suffolk County and throughout New York (with some exceptions) that they can challenge their current property tax assessments through May 20. HKCC focuses its practice almost exclusively on commercial property tax challenges. For specific deadlines and other assessment and tax information, taxpayers should consult the municipal summaries on the State Office of Real Property Tax Services website at http://orpts.tax.ny.gov/MuniPro/. New York City, Nassau County and Westchester County are exceptions to the May 20 requirement with deadlines now past in New York City and Nassau. The deadline in Westchester County Towns is June 17. Villages and cities have different deadlines throughout the state. "In the current economic climate, municipalities are struggling to balance budgets and in some cases are more inclined to litigate, or at least to delay the resolution, of assessment appeals, regardless of the merits or the struggles of taxpayers", said Jay Herman, senior partner at HKCC. "It has become indispensable that taxpayers be represented by experienced counsel, especially those with trial and litigation experience," said HKCC partner Kevin Clyne.
