Shawmut Design and Construction creates curriculum for New York City girl's school

February 10, 2014 - Construction Design & Engineering
Shawmut Design and Construction has created a curriculum and hands-on experience for the students of the Hewitt School, an independent school for girls. Shawmut is introducing young women to the world of construction, a field widely regarded as male-dominated, by allowing them to experience and learn from the full life-cycle of a construction project. Hewitt students will work with Shawmut professions to design and construct a new roof deck garden for the school throughout a 10-week program. Landscape architects and construction professionals will take students through each stage of the design and construction process: creating plans and cost estimates, developing 3D renderings, coordinating materials, gathering feedback, and finally building on the site. Classroom sessions will feature Shawmut's project executives, superintendents, and estimators at various points throughout the project who will share what their responsibilities and role entails. Sessions will feature Q&A workshops and demonstrations for students.
