Gamco Corp., one of the New York metro area's leading manufacturers of special fenestration products and architectural metals, played an important role in a recent Newark Liberty International Airport project. Part of a major modernization of the airport's terminal B international departure concourse, Gamco supplied a large custom interior glass framing system for new office spaces. The two large glass-enclosed mezzanine office spaces sit atop the newly refurbished north and south check-in ticket counter banks on the terminal's third level.
In total, Gamco supplied the custom stainless steel framing for 760 linear ft. of 10-ft. tall interior glass wall partitions. The custom designed wall system incorporates 11 glass doors in each of the two mezzanines, allowing subdivisions for 22 separate offices. Terminal B services a number of airlines with international and domestic service including Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, SAS, El Al and Delta. The new elevated spaces will be utilized by airline tenants for back-office non-public ticket operations.
The Gamco framing system and the mezzanine glass railing were glazed with unique translucent glass supplied by General Glass International (GGI) of Secaucus. The use of the narrow frame stainless steel and special translucent glass provides a clean, bright, modern aesthetic. The new interior storefront fenestration and glass railing complement the terminal's large soaring vaulted ceiling yet diminish the visual distractions caused by persons accessing and using the new elevated office spaces.
The terminal B framing system uses standard Gamco stainless steel storefront and entrance products with a semi-reflective non-directional finish in a custom configuration. The main glass framing for the new airline ticket offices (ATO) used Type 304 stainless steel 1-1/8" x 7/8" angle frames and 2" x 5" posts, both with 1/4" wall thickness in factory fabricated modular units. The modular framing is secured to the concrete floor slab and to a horizontal steel I-beam support structure. The framing system is structurally glazed with 9/16" special translucent glass.
The new ATO glass swing doors utilize Gamco's HS-350 Series Herculite door product line, which features minimal framing. The Gamco Herculite doors use a top pivot patch fitting and an 18-gauge stainless steel cladded bottom rail shoe with integral Rixon floor closer, which leaves both side rails and most of the top rail of the glass door frameless. Gamco structurally glazed the doors at the factory with 9/16" special translucent glass. Gamco also supplied the bottom rail locksets, custom stainless steel 7" saddles and vertical full height handles for the office doors.
In addition to the large office framing system, Gamco supplied 616 linear feet of 2" diameter round 14-gauge Type 304 stainless steel railing with a non-directional finish for the project. The handrail runs along the office area exterior perimeter walkway and the staircases used to access the north and south mezzanine office areas.
The fenestration contractor for the Terminal B modernization project is Josloff Glass of Newark, NJ and VRH Construction Corporation is the general contractor. Voorsanger Architects of New York, NY is the project designer and architect, while Larson Engineering's Scottsdale, AZ office provided structural consulting services for the interior glass wall and railing systems. Newark Liberty International Airport is owned and operated by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
This is not Gamco's first project at Newark Airport's Terminal B. A few years ago Gamco supplied custom glass and metal work for a special pass-through window used by the U.S. Customs Service.
