The Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG) has made philanthropic contributions totaling $100,000 to three Long Island charities. The donations were made to Sunrise Day Camp, the Huntington YMCA and the Community Development Corp. of Long Island. LIREG, a networking and philanthropic group composed of executives in the real estate industry and allied trades, raised the funds through member contributions and through fund-raising events held throughout the year. Its donations are used to fund real estate-related endeavors of various charities. "These three organizations were the most outstanding in terms of their reach and the scope of their projects among the dozens of organizations that sought our assistance this year," said Peter Schapero, chairman of LIREG's charity committee. "The Long Island Real Estate Group takes seriously its efforts to make a difference on Long Island," said LIREG co-president Samuel Yedid. "I am very proud of the tremendous good we do," said LIREG co-president Brad Cronin. Sunrise Day Camp in Wheatley Heights, which provides free summer day camp to 500 cancer-stricken children and their siblings, was awarded $50,000. The funds will be used to construct an 8,800 s/f pavilion to accommodate campers on hot or rainy days, who due to their medical conditions cannot be accommodated at such offsite locations as movie theaters and bowling alleys as other day camps do on such days. "It's because of this donation that allows us to open our doors," said Bonnie Flatow, director of hospital and community relations at Sunrise Day Camp. The Huntington YMCA was awarded $25,000 to be used in a capital campaign project that includes the expansion of its facilities to accommodate the growing programming and services it provides to the community. "Thank you for your extremely generous support of our important work," said Anne Brigis, president of YMCA of Long Island. The Community Development Corp. of Long Island, an affordable housing agency based in Centereach, was awarded $25,000. The funds will be used to renovate 10 single family homes in Suffolk County to provide affordable rental accommodations for five formerly homeless families and five families reunited from foster care placements or other families who have been referred by Suffolk County Department of Social Services. "The work that we do is meaningful," said Maryanne Garvin, thanking LIREG's "movers and shakers" for "giving back to the community" LIREG, formed in 2004 to encourage networking among Long Island real estate developers, owners and allied trades and to raise funds for charitable real estate-related projects on Long Island, has 300 members. Since its founding, LIREG has contributed more than $650,000 to numerous real estate-related projects undertaken by charities on Long Island, including contributions to Angela's House, Camp Anchor, Children's Medical Fund of New York, Family Service League, Fitzgerald House, The Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Haven House/Bridges Inc., Hospice Care Network, Katz Women's Hospital at North Shore - Long Island Jewish Hospital, Let the Children Play, Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, the Long Island Holocaust Memorial, North Shore Holiday House, Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, St. Francis Hospital and Sunrise Day Camp.
