Long Island Canstruction exhibition to be held Oct. 26-Nov. 7
October 16, 2012 - Long Island
Canstruction is a global charity of the design & construction industry to help fight hunger in our communities. Produced locally by Canstruction Long Island, Inc., the event is a design/build competition involving five-person teams of architects, engineers, contractors and/or those professionals mentoring students, associations or businesses as they design and build giant self-supporting structures made entirely of new canned food.
The event takes place at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, NY. The teams build the structures on October 24th. The Awards Ceremony takes place on October 25th. The exhibit is open to the public from October 26th thru November 7th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Admission to the exhibit is a canned food donation(s). Visitors' donations determine the People's Choice Winner for the competition. For the entire duration of the exhibit, collection bins will be located next to each structure - visitors vote for their favorite structure by placing their food donation in the bin next to their favorite structure. The structure with the most donations in its bin wins "People's Choice."
Since 2007, Canstruction Long Island has donated over 193,000 cans of food, the equivalent of 80 TONS of food and thousands of dollars to the Long Island Cares, Harry Chapin Food Bank. Its goal is to help thousands on Long Islanders who begin and end their days with the anguish of hunger and/or food insecurity.
The participating teams include the following companies and educational institutions: Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett, Inc., Grassi & Co., CPAs, Nassau Community College, Armao, Costa & Ricciardi, CPAs, Rosenbaum Design Group, PW Grosser Consulting Engineers, H2M architects + engineers, Temple Sinai of Roslyn, Combined Resources, Ambrosino Consultant Corp., Excel Interior Finishes, Friends Academy, Greenwood Pedersen, Inc., Jan's Lines and Designs and Spector Group.
Canstruction Long Island is a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity and operates under 100% volunteerism. Canstruction is using 'one can' as a catalyst for change, 'one can' to represent the building blocks of these massive sculptures, 'one can' to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Through the generosity of volunteers, celebrity judges, and members of the community, Canstruction has contributed millions of pounds of food to community food banks demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger. Since 2007, the participants of Canstruction Long Island have donated over 193,000 cans of food and thousands of dollars to help feed the hungry on Long Island.
