Skanska USA, a leading provider of construction management, preconstruction, and design-build services, recently donated 50 hard hats to children taking part in the Construction Industry Advancement Program (CIAP), a program designed for students who would like to pursue a career in civil engineering. Hundreds of middle school and college students participated in this year's program, learning about highway construction first hand from Skanska's civil engineering professionals. Children were able to observe and engage Skanska's volunteers to gain valuable insight into the civil engineering industry. Skanska has participated in CIAP for the past three years, and was thrilled to support CIAP this year by donating hard hats in an effort to teach children interested in the industry while simultaneously stressing the importance of safety, one of the company's core values. Skanska USA is responsible for the construction or rehabilitation of such structures as the World Trade Center, Giants Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Brooklyn Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Queensborough Bridge, AirTrain-JFK Light Rail System, Jacob Javitts Center and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in San Francisco. Skanska is wholly committed to sustainability, whether it's in their projects or the industry, itself. Skanska takes on interns each summer through the Construction Industry Advancement Program (CIAP) Job Fair which Skanska has taken part in for the past three years. The past two years, an intern was hired full time. Construction Industry Advancement Program (CIAP) exists to promote the New Jersey Construction Industry and construction careers. In addition to an apprentice program for high school seniors, scholarships for college students studying civil engineering, CIAP runs multiple summer camps that partner children as young as 8 with companies like Skanska to encourage careers in civil engineering. These camps offer field trips to the union training centers and special programs all from union trades featuring the carpenters, construction laborers and the operating engineers from participating companies.
