Petrillo Stone Corp. has begun the installation of the new stonework for the exterior of Hughes Hall, formerly a residence at Fordham University, soon to be the home of Fordham's Gabelli School of Business. One of the main buildings of the Rose Hill campus, the hall was first built in 1891 and named for the university's founder, Archbishop John Hughes. The 50,000 s/f hall is currently undergoing a massive multi-million dollar renovation under Tishman Interiors, the project's construction manager.
Petrillo has a long-standing relationship with the university dating back to 1935 when Antonio Petrillo, the company's founder, and his son, John, installed the stone for Keating Hall, a commanding building that remains the centerpiece of the university.
Atlantic black granite will replace the aging Manhattan schist that is used as coping stone on top of the wall. Mountain white marble will be used for the steps, risers, handicap ramps and as accent stone running around the building.
"The goal is to renovate a landmark 100-year-old building to give it the strength to last through the 21st century and beyond," said Ralph Petrillo, current co-owner of Petrillo Stone. The work will remain faithful to the original design intent yet be fortified to withstand over 100 years. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of the summer.
For over a century, Petrillo Stone Corp. has been supplying, fabricating and installing interior and exterior stonework for many of the landmark and historic buildings of the tri-state area including the plaza at Lincoln Center, the UN, Rockefeller Center, the Jewish Museum and St. John the Divine.
