Name: Marilyn Kane Title: President and Principal Company/firm: Iridium Capital LLC Years with company/firm: 3 Years in field: 25 Years in real estate industry: 30 Address: 171 Madison Ave. NY, NY Telephone: 212-686-7481 Email: [email protected] URL: www.iridiumcapllc.com Real estate organizations/affiliations: AREW; NYCREW; 100WHF During the last 10 years of your career, which professional accomplishment, honor or achievement was most meaningful to you and why? I felt honored that Crain's New York Business included me in their special section "New York's 100 Most Influential Women in Business." Since then, I have had the opportunity to continue with similar distinction in other real estate publications as well as having my articles published in Real Estate Weekly, Real Estate Finance & Investment, and New York Real Estate Journal!! Which project, deal or transaction was the 'game changer' in the advancement of your career during the last 10 years? When I went from brokering real estate deals to being the principal in a transaction in 2008, I was on my way to re-thinking what to do with my acquired real estate acumen on an entirely different scope; leveraging that investment, created for me more capital to continue a lucretive strategy and purchase other properties. How do you contribute to your company and / or the industry? We have been successful in educating individuals on alternative real estate investments within their IRA, bringing in additional capital to the real estate market. What advice would you give to women just starting out in commercial real estate? My advice would be to work for a substantial, reputable real estate firm where they are willing to mentor, teach, share, and promote you in your efforts. If you are going into brokerage, do not expect a salary or a draw in the beginning...just go with the best firm that offers you opportunity. Be clear on your contractual agreement and the basis of commission payments. Participate in many different forms of networking and be willing to put in time for early morning and evening real-estate related events and programs. How do you manage the work/life balance? I still wonder how I managed a career and raised three wonderful children-all successful, happy adults, leading productive, intelligent lives, and pursuing career paths of their choice while they (the older two) raise their own children. And yes, I will take some of the credit for how great they turned out! Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why? I was influenced by a passion, and a necessity, to succeed in a career, if not in life, after having survived a difficult financial journey where I was totally responsible for supporting my three children. Where would you like to be 10 years from today? HERE and THERE! Though in so-called retirement years, I would still be one of the managers of my $100 Million Dollar Fund - IC Income and Growth Fund, which will be recognized as the first fund started by Iridium Capital Partners, a real estate investment firm I founded back in 2009!
