Starbucks selected Schimenti Construction to build its flagship store in Times Sq. in celebration of its 40th year anniversary. One of Starbucks top performing stores in North America, it was critical to minimize the time in which the existing/functioning space was out of operation. In addition, Schimenti had to complete the full build out while two adjacent retail spaces were being acquired.
The store, designed by TSC*Design, 275 Seventh Ave., is the eighth New York City Starbucks to be LEED certified. It combines a high-tech, futuristic coffee experience with all the amenities, energy and spirit of being in the heart of the Times Sq. Theater District.
Starbucks' commitment to shared planet initiatives and its community is evident in this store's design. All wood used is FSC certified, and the casework and solid wood wall cladding was manufactured locally. Most of the lights use energy efficient LED and CFL, and are on a line limiting control panel. All paints, finishes and adhesives used contained low VOCs. The concrete floor contains recycled materials and was manufactured locally. Providing considerable water savings, low-flow faucets and bathroom fixtures were installed.
The scope of this project included the installation of two 25-ton AC units, a 90-inch monitor, two new bathrooms, new ceramic tile, sealed and polished concrete floors throughout the store, as well as modifications to the store front. "We worked seamlessly with all trade subcontractors, building landlord and client team to deliver a truly special store for Starbucks," said Schimenti project manager, Joe McGowan.
Schimenti Construction, headquartered in Ridgefield, Conn. with offices in New York City, has built a strong reputation in the retail construction industry and has developed a solid niche in urban construction. "That's why so many leading retailers have come to Schimenti to build their 'flagship' stores in Manhattan," Schimenti president Matthew Schimenti said. "Our thorough understanding of how to get things done in the hectic New York environment, our extensive experience in working with historic locations and difficult delivery processes, along with our dedicated team of construction professionals are just some of the reasons we've been selected to create so many of these truly special stores," he said.
Retail giants such as Barnes & Noble, Fossil, Hollister, REI, Sunglass Hut, and Zara have turned to Schimenti to build their "flagship" stores.
