Crystal Window & Door Systems recently supplied over 2,600 energy efficient replacement aluminum windows for the 40-story Knickerbocker Plaza rental apartment complex. Located at 1751 Second Ave. on the Upper East Side, the building has undergone a major energy efficiency "weatherization" upgrade, which in addition to new windows includes lighting improvements and new Energy Star appliances. One of New York's premier window installation and weatherization contractors, ASK Construction of Astoria, performed the fenestration work.
"Crystal is a preeminent supplier of modern, energy efficient windows for weatherization projects in the N.Y.C. area and throughout the nation," said Vincent Grieco, Crystal's N.Y. regional sales manager. "Our broad product line of aluminum and vinyl windows, superior thermal performance, appealing features and options, and competitive pricing make Crystal Windows an easy choice for architects, energy services firms, government funding agencies, and property managers and owners involved with weatherization and efficiency upgrade projects."
Crystal supplied almost 2,200 Series 6000 aluminum double-hung windows for Knickerbocker Plaza's apartments. Over 200 Series 8100 aluminum picture windows and more than 200 Series 8200 aluminum project-out windows were installed in a stacked configuration in hallway areas.
The Crystal Series 6000 has an outstanding AAMA rating of H-HC65 and features heavy-duty thermally broken 4-¼" frames, with custodial lock tilt-in sashes and 1" insulating glass units. To accommodate the needs of the building's many senior tenants, lower window sashes were equipped with easy to operate Ultra Lift balances. The Crystal Series 8100 picture and 8200 project-out aluminum windows have great AAMA ratings of F-AW85 and AP-AW80, respectively. Both the 8100 and 8200 feature strong durable 2-¼" frames with 1" insulating glass units. All the windows were ordered with the optional face flange frames and interior snap trim with heavy-duty clip accessories to facilitate quick and complete replacement of the building's original aluminum windows
For energy efficiency all the windows were specified with special PPG Solarban 60 Low-E coating and Argon gas-filled insulating glass units. For aesthetics and durability the windows received an environmentally friendly bronze powder coat finish meeting the rigorous performance and durability specifications of AAMA 2604 national standards.
Knickerbocker Plaza is one of three large residential buildings constructed on the site of the former Jacob Ruppert Brewery, which closed in the 1960s. Built as part of New York State's Mitchell-Lama program which supports lower- and middle-income housing, Knickerbocker Plaza was part of a major urban revitalization effort for the Manhattan neighborhood. The 40-story structure, which opened in 1975, has 578 rental apartments and 1,500 residents, about one-third of whom are seniors.
