Stalco Construction, Inc. completed renovations and building system upgrades at NTT America's data center located at 111 8th Ave. Stalco served as design/builder for the 20,000 s/f project that encompassed a section of the mission critical facility operated by NTT America, a subsidiary of Nippon Telephone and Telegraph Corp. of Japan.
"The team performed all work without interrupting the facility's 24/7 operations. This required very detailed logistical planning, particularly for the utilities work and re-configuration of the cooling system," said Stalco president Alan Nahmias.
The project encompassed a DC plant and electrical service upgrades; installation of nine Data Aire condensers within the data center spaces; relocations of ductwork to accommodate revised equipment layouts; ceiling, wall, control room and office area renovations; and repairs to raised computer flooring. The project included an overnight swap of two complete, 4,000 s/f office cubicle systems between NTT's N.Y. and N.J. locations. Both facilities resumed normal office operations the following morning.
In two data center rooms, Stalco installed a pressurized cooling system that collects warm air below the suspended ceiling, re-circulates it through the cooling condenser units located in the server rooms, and then forces the cold air back in through the raised floors.
During construction, Stalco employed strict dust contamination prevention measures in order to protect the data and telecommunications equipment. These included erecting temporary partitions and encasing the equipment in a sealed plastic sheet wrapping. The team operated within a strict security environment that called for multiple access control and identity check procedures.
