MGM MIRAGE CityCenter's ARIA Resort & Casino received an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, according to Robert Sedlak, PE, LEED-AP, senior VP of WSP Flack + Kurtz. WSP Flack + Kurtz provided mechanical-electrical-plumbing, fire protection and telecom services for the project, which contributed to the 3.8 million s/f facility's LEED Gold rating. The sustainable design technologies that WSP Flack + Kurtz pioneered on behalf of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architecture have led to a 30% improvement in energy efficiency compared to a similar building meeting the minimum code requirements, an estimated savings of 31 million gallons of water each year, as well as an improved indoor air quality in the casino through the use of a displacement ventilation system. "What was so rewarding about the project was the extent to which we collaborated with the architect," said Sedlak. "We were able to play a major role in the design process, working closely with Pelli Clarke Pelli and the entire architectural team. "We're delighted with the results, and we're proud that this project has received such a prestigious honor from the design industry."
