Suffolk Community Council awarded Glen Cherveny of Axelrod & Cherveny Architects with their Long Island Advocate for Accessibility Award at a recent reception. Cherveny worked in collaboration with Suffolk Community Council over the past year to bring accessibility standards to Long Island towns and also to become part of the New York State Building Code. The building standards, which allow for senior citizens to stay in their own home, include such architectural features as: one no-step entry, accessible bathroom on the first floor, doorways that allow for wheel chairs, lever-type door handles, and other accessible building features. Cherveny and Suffolk Community Council's work has resulted in the building standards being adopted by the Towns of Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, Southampton, and Riverhead. In addition, Cherveny is advocating at the New York State level to have the standards become part of the New York State Building Code.
