USGBC LI chapter is growing to meet demand
October 25, 2010 - Long Island
We have all heard that green building is the 'right thing to do.' Our Long Island US Green Building Council chapter has been quick to point out that it is actually the 'smart' thing to do, and it seems that we're not alone in this belief. The rate at which buildings are being renovated or constructed using the LEED rating system is incredible. Earlier this month I was pleased to attend the ribbon cutting of the 4th Police Precinct (anticipating LEED certification) and the award of the LEED certified plaque at the Leviton World Headquarters. Two major green projects, on the same day, in the same town-I can get used to this. Listening to leadership from these and other organizations speak about the reasons why they built to be LEED certified, a common chord is heard-green building makes business sense. Not only is it good for the environment, but employees are happier and more productive all while the buildings operating costs are reduced. It is quite simply, the smart thing to do.
In response to the demand, the Long Island chapter has and will continue to increase the supply of programs and educational opportunities. In partnership with Stony Brook's Advanced Energy Training Institute we have tripled the number and frequency of our LEED study groups even including a private seven week session for Suffolk County government employees. The quality and range of programs is incredible. On October 28th we will have an encore presentation on Indoor Air Quality, followed on November 4th by a panel discussion on 'Managing the LEED jobsite.' This much anticipated program is one of the first to redirect the focus from the design community to the needs and responsibilities of the contractor working in the field on a LEED project. Of course all USGBC-LI programs offer continuing education credits, great food and networking opportunities. In fact, in January we will be offering a full day of hour long breakout sessions offered by a range of experts on varied topics so that you can walk away with an increased knowledge on green building technologies along with up to six Learning Units.
In response to the need, USGBC-LI will begin renovation (LEED-CI) of its new expanded headquarters at 150 Motor Pwy. in Hauppague where we will begin offering additional training and educational events. Join us as we continue to grow and support our local Long Island building community. Remember-when you build green, everyone profits-it's simply the smart thing to do.
