The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce named the ten winners of the 2010 Building Brooklyn Awards, who will be honored on July 15, at Stage 6 at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The winners include: Atlantic Terminal in the civic and institutional category, IAVI Design & Development Laboratory in the economic development category, Juliana Curran Terian Pratt Pavilion in the educational category, Congregation Beth Elohim-Exterior Restoration in the historic preservation category, Remains Lighting in the industrial category, Toren for the National Grid Award for energy efficiency, Brooklyn Bowl in the retail category, Schermerhorn House in the residential: affordable category, The Silhouette in the small scale residential category, and 80 Metropolitan in the residential: multifamily category.
"The judging panel reviewed an excellent group of nominated projects and selected those representing the best of Brooklyn. This year's trends included an abundance of projects with sustainable features, many of them LEED-certified, and a high volume of interesting, local retail projects. The judges sought to honor projects that captured that indescribable element that makes Brooklyn what it is today after a decade of unprecedented growth in real estate, as well as a building boom that has redefined parts of our borough and our Downtown skyline," said Brooklyn Chamber president & CEO Carl Hum.
An independent, ten-member panel of Brooklyn-based architects, planners, economic development experts and city officials judged nominated projects on a specific set of criteria, including design excellence, positive economic impact, enhancing neighborhood services and amenities, context to the surrounding community, and sustainability.
In addition to recognizing these ten projects, the chamber also will honor David Kramer, principal, The Hudson Companies Incorporated, and Joe Chan, president, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, who produced the first Building Brooklyn Awards event during his tenure at the chamber.
