John Gallin & Son completes construction on 4,000 s/f project
John Gallin & Son has completed construction of the Action Center to End World Hunger, a first of its kind interactive multimedia center developed by Mercy Corps, the global relief and development agency, at Battery Park City.
According to Michael Gallin, principal at John Gallin, the project was designed to qualify for the United States Green Building Council's LEED platinum certification, the highest recognition available. The project incorporates deconstructed materials, which are recycled from demolished buildings, and in this case were flown in from New Orleans. More than 75% of the project's waste was recycled, he adds.
Among its other sustainability factors, the Action Center features radiant heat flooring, wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and the use of a recycled water supply.
The 4,000 s/f Action Center is located at 6 River Terrace. Gallin notes that constructing the facility to accommodate its interactive features and LEED platinum components "made the Action Center both an exciting and challenging project, and ultimately a highly gratifying experience. We are very proud to have assisted Mercy Corps in its extremely important mission."
The project team also included ESI Design, Gary Shoemaker Architects, PC and the IP Group as the engineer.
