HOK provides design services for 6,500 s/f renov. of former firehouse

The New York Office of HOK, one of the world's leading architecture and urban design firms, unveiled the redesign of the former Engine Company 204 Firehouse, turning the space into The BP Music Center for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, one of the nation's groundbreaking music ensembles, and Create!, a non-profit organization for children's art education and training. The City of New York approved the lease of the late 19th century firehouse. "We are thrilled to be helping the Brooklyn Philharmonic, a long time contributor to the cultural life of New York City, create a new home for themselves that will also be shared with the Community," said Juliette Lam, senior principal and director of HOK's Interiors Group. HOK NY's pro-bono 6,500 s/f renovation will incorporate a multi-purpose space for performances, meetings, lectures, and other community uses on the ground floor. The second floor will house the offices of the Brooklyn Philharmonic and Create!. A music rehearsal room is also included in the plans. Keeping in tune with preserving the architectural character of the firehouse, HOK will restore the brick exterior to its natural color. An elegant palette of colors, textures, lighting and materials will be used to showcase the community room. The same style will be used to continue the inspirational flow into the other working spaces, creating a rejuvenated-feeling for the occupants taking over the old firehouse. HOK will also design a modern, all-glass entrance, complete with marquee. "Brooklyn Philharmonic is extremely grateful to HOK for their commitment towards ensuring the bright future of the BP," said Barclay Collins II, chairman of the board.
