2021 Women in Building Services: Niurka Valera, McAlpine Contracting

Name: Niurka Valera

Title: Project Manager

Company Name: McAlpine Contracting

In the past year, what project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of?

Of my recent projects, I am most proud of The Lois, a $70 million, 250-unit ground-up multi-family development at 350 Clarkson Ave. in Brooklyn, for which I served as project manager. The McAlpine Contracting team has successfully completed this large and complex development despite working during the pandemic. The jobsite remained active throughout last year, while our field personnel adhered to strict safety and wellness guidelines. I am very proud of being a member of a team that overcame such unprecedented logistical difficulties and delivered a beautiful property to our client, The Hudson Companies. I am also excited about my current project – interior upgrades to street-level retail spaces at 110 East 60th St. in Manhattan, a medical services building owned by Macklowe Properties.

How do you contribute to your community or profession?

I serve as the secretary at the Fusion Bilingual Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Bronx. As part of my church duties I volunteer and support numerous community outreach programs, such as coat drives and other clothing donation activities, toy drives, and back-to-school events that provide supplies to school-age children.
