Professional Profile: Thomas Hughes 2015

Thomas Hughes - 2015

Name: Thomas Hughes - 2015

Title: Principal

Company: TPG Architecture

Location: New York, N.Y.

Birthplace: Wayne, N.J.

Education: Bachelor of Architecture, The Catholic University of America

First job outside of architecture:  Unloading trucks at a warehouse. Mindless work, no stress, kept me in great shape – I really miss it sometimes.

First job in real estate or allied field: Draftsman, Rippeteau Architects, Washington, D.C.

What do you do now and what are you planning for the future? I am a principal at TPG Architecture and I direct a studio that focuses on workplace projects, particularly those in the financial services sector.  I look forward to helping evolve our practice as the workplace, the culture and the world changes.

How do you unwind from a busy day in architecture? Laugh with my wife and kids.

Favorite book or author: “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace

Favorite movie: The Beatles Help!

Last song you purchased/downloaded? “A Pox on You,” Silver Apples

One word to describe your work environment: Vibrant

Rules to live by in business: Design for the client, not for yourself. The customer is (almost) always right.  Take notice when you see something done well, and then do it a little better.

If you could invite one person to dinner (living or dead, but not related to you) who would it be and where would you go?  Tony Soprano at Rao’s (hey, if the guest can be dead, surely he can be fictional…)

What is your dream job? I’ve got it now – unless there’s a MLB team that needs an over-the-hill second baseman who can’t hit a curveball.
