New York, NY The Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater New York (BOMA New York) hosted a celebration at the Mandarin Oriental to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The event, attended by more than 400 guests, celebrated BOMA New York’s many accomplishments throughout the past 50 years.
“Since BOMA New York’s founding in 1967, we have represented commercial property owners, managers and professionals in the Greater New York City region – the largest industry in the market area, generating approximately $1.5 billion in annual tax revenue,” said BOMA New York president James Kleeman. “It was amazing to celebrate with so many former BOMA New York presidents and members, and see the Empire State Building illuminated in the illustrious BOMA Blue in honor of our 50 years in the Empire State. I highlighted that we are hard at work implementing our long-range plan. I am proud of all BOMA New York has accomplished and excited for these future efforts.”
The event was attended by BOMA International chairman & CEO Robert Brierley, BOMA International president & chief staff officer Henry Chamberlain, BOMA New York members, industry professionals and 13 former BOMA New York presidents including: John Belt, Bob De Siena, Peter Di Capua, Ed Fallon, Vice Fantauzzi, Steve Ford, John Griffin, Angelo Grima, Tom Hill, Tony Lifrieri, Lou Mantia, Ed Rytter and Bleecker Totten.
The event included remarks delivered by BOMA New York president Kleeman and live entertainment and performances by Ultimate Entertainment.
During his remarks, PKleeman highlighted milestones from BOMA New York’s tenure including:
1967 – BOMA New York was founded by a group of 53 property management professionals.
1970 – The BOMI Institute, an independent educational institute to fulfill the need for a higher level of training and expertise in the property and facility management profession was created, and BOMA New York member Frank Briggs was its first chairman.
2001 – As a result of the September 11, 2001 tragedy, BOMA New York was recognized as the first line of defense for commercial owners and tenants, and created a local Preparedness Committee within in the association. Later, BOMA International and BOMA Mid-Atlantic adopted this model. The preparedness committees meet monthly with local police, fire and emergency management personnel to discuss upcoming planned local events and to prepare for any unplanned events that cannot be predicted.
2016/2017 – BOMA New York rolled out its Emerging Leaders Membership Category and their own Committee charged with creating programming and events for their targeted membership. Further, we established the Mentorship Program pairing “seasoned members” with “emerging leader members” bridging the gap between the “boomers and millennials”. This has been very well received.
2016/2017 – BOMA New York formed a Technology Committee, and in their first year, they’ve launched our new website. Their next big task on the horizon is to create our APP, scheduled to debut in early 2018.
