Said Fradkin & McAlpin principal Bennett Fradkin, “Our goal was to create a flexible commercial space that would be a 21st-century urban twist on the neighborhood’s 19th-century industrial style. We accomplished that goal with a design that alludes to the neighborhood’s historical aesthetic but has a contemporary spirit and all of the state-of-the-art amenities that today’s retailers demand.”
The 12-person architecture, planning and design practice of Fradkin & McAlpin is a small firm with large-firm capabilities and a reputation for managing large-scale institutional, corporate and residential projects without sacrificing the personal attention each deserves. Experts in adaptive-reuse, the studio has worked on projects involving buildings designed by some of the 20th century’s greatest architects, including Edward Durrell Stone, Philp Johnson, Rosario Candela and Wallace Harrison. Equally adept at turning 19th-century manufacturing properties into compelling contemporary work spaces, Fradkin & McAlpin has done work for Brooklyn Brewery, the Salvation Army and other clients drawn to the raw, open properties found in formerly industrial neighborhoods. In the area of new design, the studio has created sumptuous retail environments all over the world for Tiffany & Co. and striking high-end houses and apartments in New York City and elsewhere.
