ACLD to build Children's Center for Learning and Recreation in Bay Shore

Bay Shore, NY ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities), a not-for-profit organization, has purchased The Mark Country Day School and Camp. The 8.5 acre property will be used to build The Children's Center for Learning and Recreation at Bay Shore. In order to complete the project, ACLD is asking the Long Island community for help through charitable contributions.

For more than 50 years, ACLD has offered a multitude of educational programs and services to thousands of children, teens and adults with learning and developmental disabilities. Due to overcrowding in many public school programs, the need for integrated education initiatives has never been more apparent. ACLD's director of development and community relations, Colleen Crispino said, "The rise in the number of Autism cases across the country is staggering. One in 150 children will be diagnosed with some degree of Autism. Now more than ever, specialized education environments must be created to meet the needs of our community. We hope to build a dynamic Children's Community Center where learning and recreation will positively affect the lives of individuals and families alike."

The Center will encompass 30,000 s/f of space and feature a modern gym and three swimming pools, situated on a naturally landscaped campus.

ACLD is embarking on a capital fundraising campaign and is seeking the generosity of corporations, foundations, service groups and individuals to help make The Children's Center for Learning and Recreation at Bay Shore a reality. ACLD is also partnering with Long Island Head Start, Great South Bay YMCA and The Bay Shore School District to expand specialized education programs.

The Children's Center for Learning and Recreation at Bay Shore has a projected opening for January 2010.
